Here you can see the white contour line that has been etched into the paint.
In this drawing the random line is the darker line that travels over the clock.
Letting my Imagination Loose
Lately I have been playing around with line to help liberate my imagination. Above are two examples. Details from larger pieces; working in acrylic/canvas and Micron pen/paper respectively. The process is the same in both. I am using a technique taught to me when I was quite young. I make a random squiggly line on my canvas (etched into a base layer paint before it dries) or paper (drawn on with a thicker pen so it is more deliberate and visible. I then look to see what my imagination sees in the angles and curves of this line. Each time I come back to the line I see something new. This is a great excercise to hone my imagination and let it work more or less unconstraind as I have no fixed ideas of what I will draw or paint when I start the excercise and am not attached to the out come. A fun work in progress.
"Forest Fairy"
This is one of the pieces I am currently working on. This lovely creature has been created out of my imagination, acrylic paint and a willing canvas. She is close to done but there are still a number of high lights that need to be added both to her, the grass she is on and the trees. I am still working out how to get the feeling of light coming through the leaves and to get the shadows just the way I want them. Any suggestions are welcome.

"Red Tide"
A scorpionfish mermaid, this is an idea that I have been playing with for a while. Inspired by a beautiful print done by my friend and old mentor Karl MacKeeman, as well as my love of scorpion fish and mermaids, this seemed like a match made in Atlantis. The title of this piece comes from a natual phenomenon that used to fascinate me as a child called th red tide. More to come....
